Luke Whittaker (thelukewhittaker.com) is an emerging artist currently living and working in Boston, Massachusetts. He obsesses over figuration in everyday experiences, capturing a feeling, moment, position or scene. The goal of his work is to pull the physical body out of the mediums he uses. Attempting to extract and reveal the body that resides underneath the surface of the canvas becomes a dance between his own figure and that of the painting. In order to expose the figure, he is constantly moving back and forth between materials ranging from classic charcoal and graphite to photoshop and illustrator. His physical paintings and drawings always find a new life through the digital collages he creates from photographs of them.
Born in Toronto, Canada he was diagnosed with Leukemia at the age of five. In the midst of treatment he moved to Darien; after a bone marrow transplant, radiation treatment and chemotherapy, he was rid of the cancer at the age of eight. Luke attended Darien High School, graduating in 2016, then went on to graduate, with honors, from Rhode Island School of Design with a BFA in painting. During his senior year he participated in RISD’s European Honors Program in Rome, Italy. Luke has pieces in collections as far afield as Canada and Sweden. He is currently a Bard CCS graduate program candidate. |
